2011 Tax Guide for Tennessee Storm/Tornado Victims

IMPORTANT! Do you live in a Tennessee county that is a 2011 Federal Disaster Area? If you live in one of the counties below, special tax rules will help you.

Bledsoe Cocke Gibson Hardin Lake Johnson Monroe Rhea Tipton
Bradley Crockett Greene Henry Lauderdale Madison Montgomery Shelby Washington
Carroll Dyer Hamilton Knox Lincoln McMinn Obion Stewart

Live in a different county? If you have a casualty loss and do not live in one of the above counties, go to www.irs.gov.  Look for information about casualty losses.

Here are the special rules for people who live in one of the disaster relief counties:

1.  More time to file your 2010 tax return.
You have until June 30, 2011 to file your 2010 income tax return.

2.  Claim the loss in 2010 or 2011. You can claim a casualty loss due to the storm or tornadoes. You can claim it on either your 2010 or 2011 income tax return. Already filed your 2010 income tax return? You can still change (amend) it.

3.  Mark your returns. Claiming a loss on your 2010 return? Print “Tennessee/Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-Line Winds and Flooding” on the top of the first page. It needs to be in red ink.

4.  Free copies of lost returns. You can ask for copies of lost income tax returns. People who live in flood counties can get free copies.

5.  Take Pictures of Your Losses. Pictures can be a big help later when you try to prove your losses. You will also need to get your papers together.
