Law Clerk Volunteers: Summer and Year-Round

The Legal Aid Society has opportunities, during the summer and the academic year, for law students who can volunteer with local offices. Some of this work (such as legal or empirical research) can be done from school or home. Some tasks (such as helping to interview clients) must be done in the Legal Aid office. These are unpaid positions. The Legal Aid Society will help students to qualify for outside funding (from their schools or other sources) and will cooperate with schools who may offer academic credit for summer or school year
A. Internships During The School Year:
If you are interested in working with one of our offices in the academic year beginning in August, 2008, please contact the appropriate local office. See the Summer Internship Announcement for information about how to apply.
B. Summer Internships
The Legal Aid Society has internship positions available for the summer of 2008. The Legal Aid Society is a regional law firm that provides free, civil legal aid to people who have nowhere else to turn. It has 30 attorneys working in offices in Clarksville, Columbia, Cookeville, Gallatin, Murfreesboro, Nashville, Oak Ridge and Tullahoma. For more information please see www.las.org. We may have a few intern positions available for the summer of 2009.
The Legal Aid Society has experienced attorneys who offer interns effective legal supervision. They have achieved an outstanding record of success in litigation at every level of state and federal court. They conduct aggressive litigation, policy advocacy and public education in the fields of health, housing, community development, public benefits, education, federal income tax, nonprofit representation, consumer rights and domestic violence.
LAS has several special projects that need law intern assistance, including:
-
In Nashville, the Medical Legal Partnership with Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, through which our attorneys address legal problems that affect the medical outcomes child patients;
-
In Oak Ridge and Nashville, the Tennessee Taxpayer Project, one of the nation’s leading low-wage taxpayer advocacy centers;
-
In all offices, the SSI Project, though which LAS receives payments from the state to help disabled TANF recipients qualify for disability benefits, and thereby avoid the time limitations of federal welfare programs; and
-
In all offices, the Grier project, part of a class action settlement through which the state is obligated to pay LAS attorneys to help children in state custody receive required medical care.
Law interns should have a demonstrated interest in the problems of low-income communities. Proficiency in Spanish is helpful. Applicants must have a car. LAS is seeking strong writing skills and the ability to work with clients. First and second year students may apply.
